Mercedes-Benz Unveils the New GLA: How to Personalise Australia's Next Compact Luxury SUV
CarMoods Teamシェア
On 29 July, Mercedes-Benz pulled the covers off the third-generation GLA in a global online reveal, and the timing matters: this is the first Mercedes built on the brand's new MMA architecture to reach market, and it launches as a fully electric model first, with petrol-hybrid versions to follow later.
The electric GLA claims up to 657km of range and can charge at up to 320kW. Two versions were shown: a 250+ with rear-wheel drive producing 268hp, and a 350 4MATIC all-wheel-drive version with 349hp and 380lb-ft of torque. A 48-volt hybrid petrol variant, capable of gliding on electric power around town, is coming afterwards.
Whether the new GLA lands in Australian showrooms later this year or you're already driving a current-generation Mercedes, a new flagship compact SUV is a good excuse to think about what's actually protecting and personalising your own cabin. Have a browse of our Mercedes accessories collection, along with interior accessories and steering wheel covers that suit any generation.
This guide covers
- What's actually new about the third-generation GLA
- Accessories worth fitting on day one if you're ordering one
- Upgrades that apply just as well to any current Mercedes
- Protecting a factory-fresh cabin without overspending
What's new about the third-generation GLA
The outgoing GLA was a combustion-first small SUV with an EV variant bolted on. This one flips that order: the electric model comes first, riding on Mercedes' new MMA platform shared with the CLA. Mercedes says the packaging gives the new GLA more rear legroom and boot space than its predecessor despite similar exterior dimensions.
Inside, expect the brand's latest MBUX infotainment layout and the ambient lighting and trim choices Mercedes has been rolling out across its newer models. For existing GLA and GLC owners, the styling cues carried over mean many interior accessories sized for current models will still suit the cabin comfortably.
First accessories worth fitting on day one
If you're the type to order a new car the week it's announced, a couple of small additions make the first few months noticeably more comfortable without touching the factory trim.

Mercedes-Benz Carbon Fiber Leather Steering Wheel Cover
Protects the factory wheel from wear and sweat while adding grip, without covering up the Mercedes badge or stitching.
Shop nowPro tip
Fit a steering wheel cover and seat protection in the first month of ownership, not after the leather starts showing wear. It's far easier to keep a factory-fresh cabin looking new than to restore one that's already marked.
Already driving a Mercedes? These upgrades still apply
Not everyone is trading in for the new GLA the moment it lands, and that's fine — most of what makes a new Mercedes feel special is available for the one you already own.

Frequently Asked Questions
When will the new Mercedes GLA arrive in Australia?
Mercedes revealed the third-generation GLA globally on 29 July, launching first as an electric model in Europe. Local Australian timing and specification haven't been confirmed yet — Mercedes-Benz Australia typically follows global launches by several months.
Will accessories made for the current GLA fit the new one?
Not directly. The new GLA rides on a different platform (MMA) with revised dimensions, so dedicated neck pillows and seat accessories are generally interchangeable across Mercedes models since they attach to the headrest and seatbelt rather than the body, but steering wheel covers are sized to the wheel itself and should be matched to your specific model.
Do steering wheel covers fit over factory stitching and badges?
Quality covers are designed to sit over the factory wheel without obscuring the centre badge or steering controls, and can be removed without leaving residue on the original leather.
What's the easiest first upgrade for a new Mercedes?
A steering wheel cover and a headrest neck pillow are the two most common first purchases — both are quick to fit, don't require tools, and immediately improve day-to-day comfort.
