Car Badges, Emblems and Decals: How to Personalise Your Car Without Overdoing It

CarMoods Team

There is a moment every owner recognises: your car is fine, it is clean, and it still looks like every other one in the carpark. Badges, emblems and decals are the cheapest way to fix that — and the easiest way to get it wrong.

Done well, they read as considered and factory-correct. Done badly, they read as clutter. The difference is almost always restraint and preparation.

Start with the badge you already have

Most cars wear their original grille and boot emblems for a decade or more. Australian sun does not treat them kindly — chrome dulls, plastic hazes, and the lacquer lifts at the edges.

Replacing a faded factory badge is the single highest-impact styling change you can make, because it does not look like a modification at all. It just looks like a newer car.

Pro tip

Measure before you order. Manufacturers use several badge sizes across a single model range, and a 74mm emblem in an 82mm recess is obvious from three metres away.

The interior badge nobody thinks about

Steering wheel centre emblems sit directly in your field of view for every hour you drive, and they are usually the first interior trim piece to look worn.

Swapping one takes minutes and changes the character of the cabin more than the size of the part suggests — particularly if you go carbon-look or matte black against a light interior.

Decals: where restraint earns its keep

Decals are where personalisation goes off the rails fastest. The rule that holds up: pick one statement and let everything else stay quiet.

A single bonnet stripe or a set of wheel accents works because the eye has one place to land. Stripes plus wheel decals plus window graphics plus a badge swap is just noise.

Vinyl also has a practical advantage over paint — it comes off. If you tire of it, or you are selling, you are not committed.

Styling that also protects

The best styling parts do a job. Door sill guards are the clearest example — they cover the exact strip of paint that gets scuffed by shoes, gear and dog claws every week.

Carbon-look sills read as a sport-trim upgrade from the outside while quietly saving the paint underneath.

Fitting them so they stay put

Adhesive badges and decals fail for one reason: a surface that was not properly clean. Wax, road film and polish residue all stop the glue bonding.

Wash the area, then wipe it with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry fully. Warm the panel gently in sunlight if the morning is cold — adhesive below about 15°C never reaches full strength.

For badge removal, fishing line worked behind the emblem cuts the foam tape without scratching. Residue comes off with adhesive remover and patience, never a blade.

Carmoods recommends

Dry-fit first. Tape the badge or decal in position, step back five metres, and check the alignment from the angle people actually see your car from. You only get one chance once the backing comes off.

Personalising a car is not about adding the most — it is about choosing the two or three details that make it read as yours. Start with a crisp badge, add one accent, and stop there. Browse the full CarMoods range to find the pieces that suit your car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will replacing a badge damage my paint?

Not if you remove the old one carefully. Use fishing line or dental floss to saw through the foam tape, then soften any residue with adhesive remover rather than scraping it off.

How do I know what size emblem my car takes?

Measure the existing badge across its widest point before ordering. Manufacturers use several sizes across one model range, so the model name alone is not enough.

Do vinyl decals damage paint over time?

Quality vinyl on healthy factory paint removes cleanly, usually with gentle heat. The risk is with older resprayed panels, where the paint itself may lift.

Can I fit badges and decals myself?

Yes. Badges, sill guards and wheel stickers are peel-and-stick jobs. Long stripe kits are easier with a second pair of hands and a squeegee to avoid trapped bubbles.
