Xpeng G6 Undercuts the Tesla Model Y: How to Accessorise Australia's Newest Electric SUV

CarMoods Team

Australian order books have opened for the updated Xpeng G6, and the headline is a familiar one: another Chinese-built electric SUV has landed under the cars it is chasing. CarExpert reports the refreshed G6 arrives in showrooms later this month priced from $51,800 before on-road costs — $3000 less than the outgoing car, and below entry versions of the BYD Sealion 7, Zeekr 7X and Tesla Model Y.

The range grows from two variants to four, with two new dual-motor Performance models joining the rear-drive Standard Range and Long Range. Xpeng quotes up to 525km of WLTP range, and says its 5C charging tech can take the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 12 minutes.

It is also the first G6 update since Xpeng took over its own Australian distribution, which means more cars on local roads and a fresh wave of owners working out how to live with them. If that is you — or if you are cross-shopping a Model Y, Sealion 7 or MG S6 — here is how to make a big-glass, long-range electric SUV genuinely comfortable to own.

Big glass, big heat: the first thing to sort

The G6 comes with a panoramic glass roof as standard, and like every EV built around a fixed glass canopy, it turns into a greenhouse in an Australian summer. That matters more in an electric car than a petrol one, because pre-cooling a hot cabin comes straight out of your range.

A folding windscreen shade is the single cheapest fix. Park nose-out, throw one across the glass, and you shave several degrees off the dash and steering wheel before you even open the door.

Rear passengers get the same treatment from a suction-mounted side shade — worth having if you regularly carry kids, pets or a back-seat napper on longer runs.

Pro tip

Measure your windscreen before ordering a shade. Modern EVs have unusually steep, deep screens, and a shade sized for a small hatch will leave a hot strip along the top of the dash.

Nappa leather and a minimalist cabin: what actually needs protecting

Xpeng lists Nappa leather upholstery and heated, ventilated, massaging front seats as standard even on the entry G6. That is a lot of soft trim to look after, and leather in an EV cabin cops more direct sun than most owners expect thanks to all that glass.

Conditioning twice a year is enough for most cars. Work a small amount into the bolsters and the outer edge of the driver's seat first — that is where wear shows up long before the centre panels fade.

The steering wheel is the other high-contact surface, and in a car with a 15.6-inch screen doing most of the work, it is genuinely the thing you touch most. A cover adds grip, hides the shine that builds up on a factory rim, and takes the sting out of a wheel that has been sitting in the sun. Our steering wheel covers collection is sized by diameter, so check yours with a tape measure rather than guessing.

Long-range comfort: 500km changes what you need

A 480–525km EV rewrites your driving habits. Where an early electric car meant a stop every couple of hours whether you wanted one or not, the G6 makes Sydney–Canberra or Melbourne–Bendigo a single-sitting proposition. That is a longer stretch in one seat than most owners are used to.

Factory headrests are set for crash performance, not for a two-hour cruise, and they tend to push the head forward. A cushion that fills the gap behind the neck lets your shoulders drop back into the seat instead of holding themselves up.

Air quality matters more in an EV too. There is no engine noise or fuel smell to mask a stale cabin, so anything left in the car — gym gear, takeaway, a wet dog — announces itself immediately. A subtle diffuser beats a hanging card, and it doubles as a bit of dash jewellery in an otherwise very plain interior. Browse the full air fresheners range if scent is your thing.

The 12-minute charging stop is a different kind of break

Ultra-fast charging changes the shape of a road trip. A 12-minute top-up is not long enough to sit down for a coffee, but it is too long to stand next to the car doing nothing. Most owners end up using it as a phone-and-stretch stop — which makes a properly mounted phone the difference between a useful pause and a fumbling one.

The G6 runs wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so a mount here is about keeping the phone visible, charged and off your lap rather than about mirroring.

Vehicle-to-load is standard across the G6 range at up to 6kW, which opens up the tailgate-picnic, camp-kettle side of EV ownership. If that appeals, our travel and road trip essentials collection is the place to start.

The short version

The G6 is the latest sign that the interesting fight in Australia's EV market is happening under $60,000, not above it. Whichever badge wins your driveway, the ownership experience comes down to the same few things: keeping the cabin cool, protecting the trim you paid for, and being comfortable for the distances the battery now makes possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Tesla accessories fit an Xpeng G6?

Some do, some do not. Universal-fit items like steering wheel covers, headrest cushions, sunshades and phone mounts transfer between EVs without trouble. Model-specific parts such as moulded floor mats, screen protectors and boot liners are cut to a particular car's dimensions and will not fit correctly.

What size steering wheel cover do I need?

Measure the outer diameter of your steering wheel across the middle. Most passenger cars fall between 36 and 38cm, and covers are sold in that range. Also note whether your wheel is round or D-shaped at the bottom, since a round cover will not sit flat on a flat-bottomed rim.

Does a windscreen shade really help an EV?

Yes, and arguably more than in a petrol car. Cooling a heat-soaked cabin draws energy from the traction battery, so a cooler starting point means less energy spent on air conditioning and slightly more range available for driving.

Is leather conditioner safe on Nappa upholstery?

A pH-neutral conditioner applied sparingly is generally safe on Nappa, but always test on a hidden section first, such as the underside of a seat base. Avoid silicone-heavy dressings, which leave a slippery finish that attracts dust.
